I'm not sure what's the worst thing about the Olympics. That Governments waste enormous amounts of money on it even though the world is collapsing, perhaps because it's a good excuse to edge their society closer to a police state. That the IOC pretends they exist for the inherent nobility of sport when they are just corrupt fascists trying to drain as much money as possible from host governments/broadcasting corporations. That everybody accepts these things because of the "prestige" of the Olympics and I'm the crazy one for not wanting any part of it. That the logo is an ugly, seizure-inducing approximation of Lisa Simpsons performing oral sex. But it is probably the disgusting, cloying stories about optimistic young people following their pointless dreams that they will probably fail at.
Everything is about money, money, and let's not forget the most important thing...... money.
I must admit that I am not that big of a fan of the pomp and circumstances involving the opening and closing ceremonies; and that unfortunately is where a huge chunk of the money goes.
Other thing that really bothers me about the Olympics is the focus on nationalistic pride, And why is it such a big a deal how many gold medals your country gets? It's not a reflection on our country's (or any country's) "greatness".
On the plus side, I like the Olympics because sports on TV is fun to watch. It just is, i'll admit that. In reasonable doses. Thankfully I have the option not to watch, when it gets to be too much. And I just like seeing the young folks (of all countries) busting their asses for years on end just to have a fleeting shot at glory. Hey, at least it's a goal. |
